Rehearsals: Monday nights 6.00-7.00pm

What is Discovery Band?

The GK's Discovery Band is for people who are starting their musical journey and have not played an instrument before.

Our progressive and comprehensive programme includes instrument tuition and music theory, starting with the basics of putting your instrument together, reading music and producing a sound, taught in a small group setting.

Within months you’ll have enough experience to be part of the new Discovery Band’s first performance for an appreciative and supportive audience of friends!

But your musical journey doesn’t stop there – most Discovery Band members continue to improve, going on to join Explorer Band or even Marching Band, Concert Band or Stage Band.

Is Discovery Band right for me?

The GK's Discovery Band is the starting place for people of all ages – from primary students through to retirees – with no prior musical knowledge.

If you want to start your musical journey and learn to play a musical instrument in a structured programme with others, this is the band for you.

We also encourage members to find a one-on-one tutor (we can help with this) to support progression and solidify skills learnt in rehearsal.

Which instruments can I play?

Discovery Band is a wind ensemble made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, including:

Woodwind - Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinets (Bb Soprano and Bass Clarinet), Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone).

Brass - Bb Trumpets, French Horns, Euphonium (aka Baritone Horn), Trombones (inc. Bass), Tuba

Percussion - A variety of pitched and unpitched ‘orchestral percussion’ instruments including: Glockenspiel, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals, Triangle, Timpani, ‘toys’ (e.g. Cabassa, Woodblocks etc).

Drum Kit is not taught in the Discovery Band, but the skills learned on other instruments are foundational to all percussion including kit.
